Latest research suggests that prudent tourists are helping the growth of the UK private holiday rental market. Tourists from countries such as the United States and other parts of Europe are opting to book private holiday homes rather than hotels, in a bid to save more money on their holidays.
Tourist visits to the UK have increased year on year, as 8.3 million visits were recorded in the second quarter of this year; a 7.4% rise from the 7.8 million this period in 2010.
The amount of rental bookings for private holiday homes has risen by 8.5% over the last 5 months. This leaves the average rent of a UK holiday room at £55 per night in comparison to the average of a hotel room, which stands at £83 per night.
The study was conducted by wheretosleep.co.uk, a travel accommodation website. Radek Dobrolecki, director, commented: ‘Despite the gloomy economic outlook, holidays are still incredibly important to people. Individuals are reluctant to cut out their annual vacation altogether and are instead looking for ways to cut costs when abroad.
‘For many, the cost of accommodation has become a deal breaker when it comes to holidaying abroad and these travellers are crying out for cheaper alternatives to expensive hotel rooms,’ Many homeowners located in the prime UK tourist areas are benefiting from this increase in tourist demand, renting out their spare rooms or entire homes to holiday makers as an extra source of income.
